Volunteer Day: "For a Better Thanksgiving"
San Francisco is a beautiful place, but like most major cities there is an influx of poverty and drug abuse in certain areas. If you've ever stepped foot into the Tenderloin neighborhood of this city you are no stranger to this reality and are aware of the large homeless population that resides there.
For Thanksgiving 2014 we were thinking of volunteer initiatives we could get involved with that were focused around this neighborhood primarily because of Glide Memorial’s incredible efforts in this community.
We knew there would be several food drives and various programs distributing meals and we wanted to try something different that would still be meaningful and fun. So we organized a group of volunteers within our network to assemble and distribute hand made “Care Kits” containing hygienic items for the homeless in the Tenderloin.
We set up shop at Glide Memorial Church and in a assembly line format we were able to collectively fill and distribute 150-200 bags as you can see in the video.
The day got even better when we were able to also help collect frozen turkeys with some new friends we made earlier in the day that were inspired by what we were doing.
Overall we felt the day was a great success and we were glad to do something good for the people in this community even if just for one day. We wan to thank everyone who participated because this wouldn't have been the same without your energy. Stay tuned for our next volunteer day initiative!
